Artist Statement

Jinwon Chang focuses on life and God in his pieces, and uses art to grasp the concepts of invisibility and the spiritual world. In order to overcome his confusion with the things he cannot see, he uses art as a tool and starting point for understanding and telling the stories of his personal struggles and triumphs in regard to his faith. As he continues his pursuit of ultimate truth, he creates all of his pieces with the underlying idea that his works are not his own, but rather pieces of truth that are translated through his being. In this way, he views himself more like a vessel than the creator, and believes that art is one of the most effective methods of sharing eternal truth with others. For Chang, art is just as much a matter of listening and suppressing as it is a matter of speaking and self-expressing.

At Tusen Takk

Jinwon continued to expand his InBetween series of that aims to “visualize the light that symbolizes the spirit, the truth, and the beauty of God's creation.” The “light” that Jinwon describes is the light that is written about in Genesis 1:3, the light that creates our time, space, and the world. In contrast to many painters who concern themselves with how light is reflected in nature, Jinwon is interested in depicting “the light that is in itself, the light that is in God.” While in residence, he created work that reveals this light, bringing “healing and revealing beauty hidden within nature.” Jinwon created multiple works simultaneously with “each artwork connected, each piece in conversation, creating the vast landscape of Leland.”
